Compression Carpet

Continuing the theme of speculative design, it is fascinating how artists and designers are coming up with new innovations that try to improve mental health in the midst of a global pandemic and to satisfy the human need for intimacy. Sci-Fi artist and Body Architect Lucy McRae designed the Compression Carpet, which is a machine that allows one person to lie in, with another person adjusting the pressure of the mechanical “hug”, mimicking the touch of a human being. This generates a question: in the future where digital technologies dominate the world, will machines be enough to replace real physical interactions, combat isolation, or eliminate loneliness?
