Why We Make Art

This article asks seven different artists why they make art and gives their responses. The artists work in different mediums (musicians, visual artists, choreographers, poets), so their response speaks to the importance of simply creating something. Some of the things the different artists said that I related to was that art allows an artist to make others feel what they are feeling, to communicate their sense of the world, to not grow up too fast, and to bring thoughts and feelings together. One artists said that he has no idea why he does and whatever the reason is is unimportant. Rather, he just feels an inner compulsion to create art and simply makes art to honor this urge. He said that if he didn’t honor it he would be a broken man. I think that was my favorite answer to the question.
