Visualizing Climate Change Through Abstract Expressionism

While going through the process of creating the animated PSA posters, I began thinking about how many different pieces of art can act as PSAs, not just the posters that share an explicit message. We have also spent a lot of time this semester discussing how artwork interacts with the audience and what messages the art conveys. All these ideas were brought together when I came across Diane Burko’s pieces that abstractly illustrates climate change. Her pieces include the melting of glaciers and the death of coral reefs, and integrates harsh contrasting colors to show the decaying of our planet. Through her art, Burko is sending a PSA to the public about climate change and her moving pictures hopefully encourage viewers to take action.
