Throughout the city of Lyon, traces of artist Ememem’s work can be seen everywhere. His artistic style shares an intimate relationship with the state of the city: using colorful, ceramic mosaics, he fills the cracks left in streets, walls, and buildings. His art is a public intervention; the tiles of his works become a part of the city itself, restoring the ugly fractures and holes that had left deep marks throughout the area. His art pieces fascinated me, partially due to the fact that much of our recent activities involved public art interventions. I thought it was especially beautiful how his work are merely simple additions, small in scale compared to the entire city, yet is something that could leave an impression on so many people in a public space.
