Reimagining Portraits

You know you’ve made a good design when it elicits emotions and resonates with the viewer. And that is precisely what this artwork does. As soon as I saw it, I had to do a double take.

Without the puzzle-like piece in the middle, I don’t think the photograph would have been very remarkable. But the simple act of rearranging 16 squares in the middle of a simple portrait instantly makes this piece so much more.

The piece perfectly complements the article that it sits in. The article is about the complexities of Asian-American identity. Similarly, the artwork effectively represents how puzzling it is to navigate America as a person of color. As an Asian myself, the article was extremely moving.
