Plastic Air

This interactive data visualization by data artist Giorgia Lupi draws attention to the environmental and health impact of microplastics in the air. By clicking on the screen, you deposit a piece of plastic as a result of a common action (e.g. a plastic bag by going shopping) and the plastic item breaks into microplastic fragments, adding to the canvas of floating microplastics. Each plastic item breaks down into its own collection of shapes that differ across plastic items, creating a colorful artistic representation that also highlights the various types of microplastics and the range of sources that contribute to harmful microplastics into the air.
